Frequently Asked Questions

Blue water rings representing collaboration with parents in Chestermere Langdon Calgary Alberta

Does my child need a Speech-Language Pathologist?

Children develop speech at such different rates that as a parent it can be difficult to know if they are making adequate progress. This is further complicated by anecdotal stories of late talkers who were eventually were fine, or family doctors with a preference for the wait and see approach.

This is such a common concern that we have gathered a lot of what you need to know in our  Resources section. Check out the milestones area and the Macaroni Kid articles. We are here to help. If you are still uncertain, contact us and we can discuss your concerns.

Milestones

How quickly will we see progress?

Progress varies widely and it is impossible to predict.  We do know that the best chance of success depends on:

  • the readiness of the child
  • motivation
  • personality
  • quality and consistency of home practice
  • duration and frequency of therapy.

We often see rapid progress, but depending on the nature of your child's needs, we may focus on measured but steady progress.

Do I need to be with my child for therapy?

Yes!  We are a team.  Whenever possible you will be involved therapy. Our goal is for you to learn alongside your child so you can continue the progress throughout the week.

How much do you charge?

Services range from $130-$140/hour.  In most cases, this includes a 45-minute face-to-face session which leaves 15 minutes for the required documentation, and preparation time. Travel time (at a reduced rate) may be required outside of Chestermere. Rates are subject to vary depending on the needs and complexity of each case

Are your services covered by private insurance?

Usually. Check with your employer benefits to confirm, but in many cases you will have some coverage for speech and language therapy.  We will provide you with a detailed invoice to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement.

Where do you provide service?

Generally service is provided in the child's home. This is a familiar comfortable environment for them which promotes effective therapy. If this option is not ideal, you can meet with Sara in her home-based office. Note that Sara may not be able to accommodate travel outside of the Chestermere area. Teletherapy is another excellent option.

Is Teletherapy effective?

Most children respond very well to online therapy sessions. Sara has been on the forefront of online therapy including providing teletherapy training sessions for over 20 other speech pathologists. Online therapy can provide comfort and convenience.
